What to Do Immediately After a Truck Accident

September 26, 2026/in Accidents/by Advisory Excellence

Houston sees a constant flow of commercial traffic. Trucks share I-10, I-45, I-69, Loop 610, Beltway 8, and other busy roads with commuters, delivery drivers, motorcyclists, and families heading across the city. That volume matters when a crash involves an 18-wheeler. In 2024, Harris County recorded 6,313 crashes involving commercial motor vehicles. Those crashes included 41 fatal crashes and 98 crashes involving suspected serious injuries, according to the Texas Department of Transportation.

For someone involved in one of these collisions, the aftermath can be confusing. There may be injuries, damaged vehicles, blocked lanes, police officers, witnesses, and insurance representatives all entering the picture within a short time. People dealing with a serious collision may also choose to speak with a Houston firm such as Johnson Garcia LLP, which handles truck, car, and motorcycle accident cases in Houston, along with personal injury matters involving explosions, maritime injuries, and insurance disputes. What should you actually do first? Taking a few sensible steps can help you protect your health while preserving information that may become important in a truck accident claim.

Get Yourself Out of Danger

A wreck involving a large truck can leave debris across several lanes. If your vehicle can move and doing so is safe, get away from active traffic. Turn on your hazard lights and wait somewhere protected.

Call 911 and tell the dispatcher where the crash occurred. Houston roads can be difficult for emergency crews to navigate, particularly when a collision blocks multiple lanes. Give clear information about your location, the number of vehicles involved, and any visible injuries. Do not try to investigate the wreck while standing close to traffic. Your safety comes first.

Do Not Brush Off an Injury

Some injuries are obvious at the scene. Others are not. Adrenaline can make it difficult to judge how badly you have been hurt. Pain, stiffness, headaches, dizziness, or other symptoms may become clearer later. If emergency personnel recommend medical treatment, take that advice seriously.

If you leave the scene without going to a hospital, arrange medical care if symptoms appear or continue. Keep your medical records, prescriptions, bills, and appointment information. Those documents can help show what treatment you received after the collision.

Get the Basic Information

If you are physically able, collect the truck driver’s name, driver’s license information, employer, insurance details, and the truck and trailer identification numbers. You do not need to conduct your own investigation at the roadside. There may be information you cannot obtain yourself, such as company records or electronic data from the truck.

Still, basic identifying details can make it easier to determine which people or businesses were involved. The police report is important, too. Ask how you can obtain a copy once it becomes available.

Take Pictures Before the Scene Changes

Photos can capture details that disappear once traffic starts moving again. If you can do so safely, photograph your vehicle from several angles. Include the truck, surrounding vehicles, road surface, traffic signs, lane markings, debris, and visible skid marks. A wider shot of the scene can sometimes provide useful context that close-up damage photos miss.

Look around, too. Nearby businesses, intersections, parking lots, or traffic systems may have cameras that captured part of the collision. You may not know whether useful footage exists, but noting the surrounding area can help later.

Be Careful With Insurance Adjusters

After a serious truck crash, insurance companies may become involved quickly. An adjuster may ask what happened, how you feel, whether you can work, or whether you believe you were responsible. Stick to facts. Do not guess about details you cannot remember. Avoid minimizing an injury simply because you hope it will improve.

Truck claims can involve several layers of insurance and more than one potentially responsible party. The driver may be one part of the picture. A trucking company, maintenance contractor, cargo-related party, or vehicle manufacturer could become relevant depending on the circumstances.

Get Legal Advice Before Making Major Decisions

A truck accident can become a personal injury matter. This is especially true when someone suffers significant injuries, loses income, or faces substantial medical expenses. Houston personal injury attorneys who handle truck accident cases can review the circumstances. They even explain what options may be available under Texas law.

You do not need to decide everything immediately. Focus on getting medical care, keeping useful records, and protecting the information connected to the crash. Once the immediate crisis has passed, you can take the next steps with a clearer picture of what happened.
