Tips to Find Fake Images Online

In this era of social media and digital resources of information, people regularly come across various pictures associated with trending news sensations. Sometimes, they find several pictures suspicious and become curious to know the authenticity of the image.

No doubt, altered images have the capacity to mislead people, spread emotional stress, and affect public opinion. That is why there should be ways to help people identify fake images and take legal action against them to promote authenticity in society.

Fortunately, many helpful methods enable you to distinguish between tampered images and original images easily. For this purpose, we have discussed below the most efficient and supportive ways to find fake images online. Ready to discover? Let’s dive in.

1. Inspect The Source

Whenever any image makes you doubtful, the first thing you should do is check the integrity of the source. If the source is a social media account, then examine its history, previous posts, and relevancy between the profile and content.

On the other hand, if the source is a web platform, check their About Us page and see whether they listed their contact details or not. Most false news-spreading websites don’t mention their contact information to get secure.

Moreover, you can check the comments or reviews of source profiles to know what other people are saying about them. This will help you avoid being part of a broader disinformation campaign and comprehensively understand the image’s authenticity.

2. Reverse Image Search

The most efficient and easy way to check an image’s originality is to search by image. Many online tools and popular search engines utilize this AI technology and let their user search by image.

All you need to do is access your preferred image finder or reverse image search tool and upload the picture you want to search for. Within a few seconds, you will be provided with all possible resources where similar images have been used.

Now, you can easily dig for clues by checking whether any authentic source owns the image or not. If the image is genuine, it is more likely that many real news sources publish the same image. However, if you don’t find traces of uniqueness, then it is confirmed that either the image is altered or AI-generated.

3. Critically Examine Image

With technological advancement, many image alteration software are available on the internet. You can also see many internet resources generating real-like images using artificial intelligence.

The Scammers that lack advanced image editing knowledge leave clues of picture manipulation. That’s why you should critically look at different angles of the picture to find the fake edits. For this purpose, check for immediate signs of an image alteration, such as unusual shadowing, blurring, and cutting.

Pictures with excessive details and smoothing effects are clear signs of AI generation.

Accessing image perspective and proportion can also help identify an object’s unreal or forced placement in a picture.

4. Look at The Image’s Metadata

Metadata is rich information associated with an image that can include technical, descriptive, or administrative details of the picture. Technical metadata is automatically generated while the image owner inserts informational and authoritative data later with the help of software.

That’s why looking deeply at the meta-details of an image helps you find the original creator of the image. In addition, you can also know the technical details of the software or device used to create the picture.

To access this information on a desktop, open the “Properties” section, click “details,” and scroll down. However, small screens such as Androids and iPhones have different methods of retrieving metadata.

5. Check the Background Details

Another way to check for fabricated images is to examine the background details carefully. If a person tries to insert or remove a certain object from a picture, it requires a high skill set to match the color tones, highlights, and contrast with different parts of the image.

Moreover, sharpened or blurred edges of an object also signal that someone tried to include it in the photo by using any software.

Similarly, the backgrounds of AI-generated images are mostly noticeable. This is because the AI image generators use pre-existing instructions that produce repeating textures or patterns. In addition, AI tools prefer to provide more details about the main object rather than the background.

Bottom Line

The ongoing advancement of image editing software and artificial intelligence has increased the chances of creating and spreading fake images over digital platforms. Being an ethical user of the internet, it is essential to be able to recognize fabricated pictures to avoid adverse impacts on society. Above, we have discussed some actionable tips to stop the potential misuse of unreal pictures. But remember, performing a single practice of them doesn’t mean that the image was digitally manipulated. You can combine your logical observations with two or more actions to conclude whether the image under consideration is fake or not.
