Things to think about before hiring a Criminal Lawyer

April 23, 2026/in Lawyer/by Advisory Excellence

If you are in the unfortunate position of facing a criminal charge, it’s understandably stressful. Facing any charge is stressful in fact, and it can lead to you feeling overwhelmed, stressed and anxious. And it’s for this reason, it’s good advice to seek help from criminal lawyers.

Getting professional help will help ease the burden (although unfortunately it won’t remove all the stresses until they get the charges dropped). They can provide valuable expertise, answering any questions you have as well as putting you in the best position to clear your name – which is very important as you want to know you can rely on the person who is going to hopefully win your case.

If you are thinking about using a criminal lawyer to help your case, in most cases it’s very advisable. To help you find the right one for you, we have put together a guide on things to think about before hiring a criminal lawyer. Keep on reading to discover six key things that you should be thinking about, before signing the contract and instructing a criminal lawyer to help you. From their experience and specialism, to reputation and understanding the costs of hiring a criminal lawyer, there is plenty to think about.

Their Experience and Specialism

A good place to start is learning more about their experience and specialism. Criminal law as you can imagine is vast, with many different things which could lead you to a criminal conviction. With this in mind, you want to know the person you are hiring has experience and regularly handles cases similar to yours. Whether it’s driving offences, fraud, or more serious charges, a lawyer with relevant expertise will understand the nuances and know how best to approach your defence. With a quick phone call you should be able to find this out or by browsing their website – some clients will list previous successful cases on their website as a way to show positive feedback.

Reputation Matters

It goes without saying reputation matters. Just like most things in life, there will be law firms with a good reputation and law firms with a bad reputation. The last thing you want to be doing is hiring a law firm that has a bad reputation as it’s your future on the line, not theirs. Take time to read reviews, testimonials, and, where possible, case outcomes and view their social media channels like Instagram and Facebook. A lawyer with a strong track record and positive client feedback is far more likely to provide a reliable and professional service.

If you know you have had some friends go through court cases, then we would always advise you to reach out to them to ask for advice. They may be able to recommend someone for you to use – word to mouth recommendations are always preferable as you know you can likey trust the person they are telling you to use.

Understanding The Costs

Sadly, a criminal lawyer will cost, so you want to be sure you can afford them before proceeding. Legal fees can vary significantly depending on the complexity of your case and the level of expertise required. You should be asking them how their rate works, whether it’s a fixed fee, hourly rate, or retainer. Transparency is key here, as unexpected costs can quickly add further stress to an already difficult situation. By getting a rough idea you can put together a spreadsheet, so you know how much your budget can stretch to.

What Is Their Strategy

No matter the lawyer you choose, they should be able to explain to you their strategy before you employ them to represent you. A good criminal lawyer should be able to outline a clear, realistic approach to your case. While no one can guarantee an outcome, they should be able to talk you through potential scenarios, next steps, and the strategy they would recommend. By asking this, you can compare the different criminal lawyers’ answers and you’ll quickly get that gut feeling on who you should use.

Trust Your Gut Feeling

Talking about trusting your gut feeling, this is very true in a lot of cases in life and we think it’s a good point to bring up here. You’ll be sharing personal and often sensitive information, so it’s important that you feel comfortable with the person representing you. A strong lawyer-client relationship built on trust and understanding can make a challenging situation far more manageable. Plus, it will put you at ease and hopefully get you the outcome you would like.

Availability and Attention

Something we think is very important that you find out is how available they are and how much dedication they will give to you and your case. You may not be their biggest paying client, but that doesn’t mean you deserve anything less than their utmost attention. Some firms take on a high volume of cases, which can sometimes mean less individual attention. It’s worth asking who will actually handle your case and how accessible they will be throughout the process. Having consistent contact with your lawyer can make a big difference, both practically and emotionally.

Choosing the right criminal lawyer is not a decision to rush. Taking the time to research, ask the right questions, and find someone who aligns with your needs can make all the difference. With the right support, you’ll not only feel more confident navigating the legal process, but you’ll also give yourself the best possible chance of achieving a positive outcome. We wish we could say differently, but this process is going to be stressful, so try to be as kind to yourself as possible as you want to look after your mental health.

Have you started to look for a criminal lawyer and how has your experience been so far when trying to find one? What things do you think are most important when looking for a criminal lawyer? Is there anything missing in our guide that you think we should be adding? Let us know in the comment box below. We look forward to hearing from you.
