Things to Keep in Mind When Ridesharing

March 7, 2025/in Ride-Sharing/by News Desk

Ridesharing services like Uber and Lyft have transformed transportation, offering convenience at the tap of a button. Whether commuting to work or heading out for the night, we rely on these services for quick and affordable rides. However, safety concerns remain, from fare scams to driver misconduct.

While most trips are uneventful, passenger safety incidents have raised serious concerns. Cases of harassment and assault have led some victims to pursue legal action, including rideshare sexual assault lawsuits. Understanding key safety measures can help us avoid risky situations and make informed choices when using these services.

Verify Your Ride and Driver

Before getting into a rideshare vehicle, always double-check the car’s make, model, and license plate against the app’s details. The driver’s photo and name should also match. If anything seems off, cancel the ride and report it.

Use the app’s rating system to assess the driver’s reliability. A high rating with positive reviews can indicate a safer experience. Also, confirm that the driver knows your name before entering the vehicle—never reveal it first.

Avoid accepting rides from drivers who approach you without confirmation through the app. Legitimate rideshare drivers will never ask you to skip the app’s process.

Prioritize Personal Safety

Your safety is the top priority. Whenever possible, sit in the back seat. This gives you more personal space and makes it easier to exit quickly if needed. Most ridesharing apps have a feature that lets you share your trip details with a friend or family member. Use it! This way, someone else knows where and when you’re expected to arrive.

Also, keep your phone, wallet, or other valuables out of sight. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, trust your gut. Don’t hesitate to end the ride if you feel uneasy or uncomfortable for any reason. You can always request another one. Your safety is worth it.

Be Mindful of Costs and Surge Pricing

Rideshare pricing can fluctuate based on demand, especially during rush hours, holidays, or bad weather. Surge pricing can significantly increase fares, so checking the estimated cost before booking is important.

Most rideshare apps provide fare estimates—use these tools or third-party calculators to avoid surprises. When traveling with friends, consider splitting the fare through the app to make the ride more affordable.

After the ride, review your receipt for any unexpected charges. If you notice incorrect fees or unauthorized charges, report them immediately through the app. Staying aware of pricing helps us avoid unnecessary expenses and overcharges.

Respect Driver and Passenger Etiquette

Respecting rideshare etiquette makes the experience better for everyone. Always wear a seat belt, as required by law, and follow carpooling rules if using a shared ride. These guidelines ensure safety and a smooth trip.

Avoid distracting the driver with loud conversations or unnecessary questions. Inappropriate behavior, such as excessive talking or invading personal space, can make the ride uncomfortable.

Be mindful of noise levels and strong odors—eating messy food or wearing overpowering perfume can affect others in the car. After the ride, leave an honest rating and review. Feedback helps maintain service quality for future passengers.

Final Thoughts on a Smarter Ridesharing Experience

Ridesharing offers a great way to get around, but it’s important to remember that safety and awareness should always be our top priorities. By being vigilant, understanding how pricing works, and practicing good etiquette, we can all contribute to a better ridesharing experience.

A little preparation and common sense can go a long way in ensuring smooth and secure rides for everyone.
