The Rise of Scam Calls: How Businesses Can Stay Protected
Unfortunately, whether we like to admit it or not, we live in a world that’s packed with scams of different types, starting from the ones that happen in the virtual world, to those that occur in the real one. Those that strike us in the real world come in the shape of scam calls that reach millions of people on a regular basis. It’s sad to say that they’ve been on the rise over the past couple of years.
No matter how careful we try to be, it appears to be like it’s very challenging to protect ourselves (and our businesses from them), however, there are still things that you can do to stay as safe as possible. Want to know how? Just scroll below!
What Are The Most Common Types Of Scams?
There are numerous types of scam calls that are typically executed by people who are trying to stimulate you to either provide them with your personal/financial information or to give them money.
Now, what has become really difficult is to determine if you are contacted by a scammer or a real person. Normally, if you notice a scam likely message on your cell phone, then it can mean that the phone call is coming from someone who is potentially fishy. But will you always see that message?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. In fact, these scammers have become so intelligent and sophisticated lately that it has become very hard to determine if it is a legitimate message or call, or not.
Their messages are oftentimes so convincing, that an average person who isn’t familiar with these sorts of scams can easily think that they are being contacted by someone real. So what happens in these sorts of situations?
At times, these fraudsters might pretend to be calling from a bank, insurance company, or parcel delivery company. Sometimes, they may even pretend to be calling from the government.
That’s how cunning they are. Unfortunately, things have gotten worse during the pandemic because there were so many people who were ordering various stuff online, and even those who didn’t order anything were receiving messages that they’d missed delivery.
So once they saw these sorts of messages, they called that number where they were asked to give a certain fee in order to complete delivery. That was, in fact, a perfect moment for scammers to get their personal information or financial details.
So Is There Any Way To Protect Yourself From These Calls/Messages?
As stated in the beginning, the answer is yes, you can stay relatively safe as far as this is concerned. So what can be done then? For starters, you need to keep in mind that often (when scammers are contacting you), you will receive a message that will create some form of urgency.
They will write a message that they urgently need some money (mentioning a very serious situation), or that they need you to call them right away, and so on. Now, a lot of people will immediately get scared, believing that something is really going on.
Although their reactions are completely understandable, if something like this happens to you too, just take a moment to think whether that is really the case, or if somebody is trying to trick you.
We know that in these instances, it can be hard to stay calm, but that’s something that simply needs to be done if you want to be sure no one steals your information or cash.
Be Wary Of The Sad Messages
One of the most effective strategies that scammers utilize is sending sad messages, such as requesting money for the ones in need, who are sick, poor, homeless, etc. They are aware of the fact that most people are sensitive to these topics and situations and that a vast majority of them won’t simply be able to decline them.
Now, if you’ve never heard of a particular organization that asks for your help, or the message may seem a bit suspicious, then your gut is probably warning that there’s something wrong with it, hence you should follow your gut.
Keep in mind that scammers often pretend to be part of a charity, and they will most likely mention either someone who is very ill or a recent natural disaster that urgently requires any form of financial help. To avoid making any further mistakes, just do not interact with these people.
Turn To Call Blocking App
A lot of business owners who are dealing with these sorts of calls turn to these apps because they are capable of disrupting these scams, meaning that they won’t be able to reach your phone number.
Now, this doesn’t mean that you’ll always have an impeccable experience with them (because they sometimes label a legitimate number as fishy), however, they are definitely something that will help you in most instances as far as this is concerned.
Many of these apps come with call labelers that will notify you which calls might potentially be a scam, enabling you to determine whether you will pick up or not.
Report These Attempts As Soon As You Can
If you believe that you were targeted by these fraudsters, then you must immediately report this incident to the company you supposedly received that call from. Why is this so important? Well, that’s because a plethora of organizations utilize numerous reporting tools to help them tackle these issues.
Do Not Ever Share Your Information
As a business owner, you probably collaborate with numerous clients on a daily basis, however, when it comes to relevant information, it shouldn’t be shared with anyone, especially people you barely know.
Something like this can result in events that could potentially be detrimental to you and could even jeopardize your safety. Therefore, do not ever share things like address phone number, any type of financial information (like account number, or PIN), or identity number with anyone, unless you trust that person one hundred percent.
Unfortunately, these types of scams are widespread, and so many people get scammed on a daily basis, which is why it’s essential to talk about this topic as much as possible. We hope that this article has opened your eyes a little bit when it comes to this.
