Hogan Lovells commits to disability inclusion

Hogan Lovells has marked the International Day of People with Disabilities by announcing that it has become a member of The Valuable 500 – the largest network of global CEOs dedicated to diversity.

As a member of The Valuable 500 the firm commits to drive change and embed disability inclusion throughout the business. Delivering on its commitment to diversity and inclusion and responsible business is a strategic priority for Hogan Lovells, with ability inclusion a core focus the firm recognises is crucial to achieving the UN’s 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

CEO Miguel Zaldivar said: “Inclusion of individuals with different abilities is a key focus of our firm. We have had a longstanding commitment to people of different abilities across the globe, and we are excited that our participation in The Valuable 500 will accelerate our progress. We want our people of all abilities to understand that Hogan Lovells is a place where they belong and can thrive.”

The firm has also become a signatory to the American Bar Association Pledge for Change: Disability Diversity in the Legal Profession, further affirming its commitment to disability diversity. Pledge signatories recognise that diversity is in the best interests of their organisation, the legal profession as a whole, and the clients they serve. By becoming a signatory Hogan Lovells commits to encouraging others in the legal industry to follow suit.

In the UK, Hogan Lovells is a Disability Confident Committed employer, and has a long-standing relationship with the British Paralympic Association, being a Gold Partner and the Official Legal Services Provider. In addition, the firm supports British para-sport through its Nicholas Cheffings Para Athletes Bursary and investment in their ambassador and Paralympic, world, European and Commonwealth champion, Ollie Hynd MBE.

Hogan Lovells also provides pro bono legal advice to clients including GB SnowSport, Great Britain Wheelchair Rugby, the International Wheelchair Rugby Federation, UK Boccia Federation, the International Boccia Federation, the International Paralympic Committee, and the Japanese Para-Sports Association.

In the run-up to the re-scheduled Tokyo 2020 Summer Paralympic Games, the firm is sponsoring the Japan Riding Association for the Disabled, working in partnership to raise awareness in Japan of people with disabilities and the need for more inclusion of the disabled in sport. The firm’s sponsorship will provide para equestrian athletes with additional support as they pursue their sport.

Hogan Lovells also advises Movements for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore on a range of matters, and has created an internship program recognised by The Luxembourg Diversity Charter, and in cooperation with Ligue HMC, to change perceptions of intellectual disability by welcoming interns in office support roles for an eight week period.

Hogan Lovells to refresh practice structures and leadership

Hogan Lovells is making a series of changes to its practice group structure and the leadership of its International Management Committee (IMC). The IMC is the body that is responsible for setting and implementing the strategic direction and business operations of the firm and is made up of the heads of Hogan Lovells’ practice groups and administrative regions plus clients and markets.

These changes take effect from 1 July 2020 under the leadership of the new incoming CEO Miguel Zaldivar and Deputy CEO Michael Davison.

According to Miguel Zaldivar: “We are uniquely placed as a fully-integrated global firm. We have a high-quality business, great clients, genuine international reach, and extremely talented people. The combination of our industry sector knowledge and our market-leading position at the meeting point between business and government is admired by clients and competitors alike. These are the strengths on which we are building our firm.”

“I set out my priorities in December as being: client service; investment in our key markets; incentivising even more collaboration across the partnership; managing our profitability; and supporting citizenship, diversity & inclusion, and sustainability. The changes to our structures help achieve those priorities by bringing increased speed and efficiency to our management decision-making, continuing the work which Steve Immelt started in 2014 in moving from co-leaders to single leaders.”

The firm’s practice groups will shift from five to three. The Corporate and Finance practice groups will be combined to create a new Corporate and Finance practice made up of around 400 partners. Hogan Lovells will also more closely align its Global Regulatory and IPMT practice groups and put them together under one umbrella, Global Regulatory and IPMT, comprising around 230 partners.

Commenting on these changes Miguel Zaldivar said: “There is already a significant amount of overlap between Corporate and Finance, particularly in the capital markets space as well as in areas such as joint ventures, M&A, and commercial work. Bringing them together creates a powerful force for our clients. With Global Regulatory and IPMT there are already synergies between them in areas such as privacy and cyber-security; pharmaceutical and technology patent litigation; and antitrust investigations. Both are also top-rated practices groups in their own right in the market and we will protect those positions in terms of how we go to market.”

The firm’s regions will also shift from five to three. The firm’s current Americas and D.C. regions will be combined into a single region. The firm is also creating a single Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region which combines its existing UK and Africa region with Continental Europe and its offices in the Middle East. The current Asia Pacific and Middle East region will focus on the emergent markets of Southeast Asia as well as the established economies of Australia, Greater China, and Japan.

Zaldivar commented: “Having a ‘One Americas’ region will enable us to more easily take a holistic and integrated approach to sharing clients, work, investments, and resources.

We have already adopted the same approach very successfully with our offices in Germany and Greater China. Having a single EMEA region is an approach taken by many of our clients and competitors, and reflective of the economic and social ties in that part of the world as well as time zone and geographical proximity.”

He continued: “I have tried to ensure continuity of leadership while prioritising bringing on a new and diverse generation of leaders.”

Zaldivar said: “The UK and Washington, D.C. offices will continue to have participation in IMC discussions where relevant and, with Stefan Schuppert also attending IMC meetings by invitation, we are now adding Germany, given the importance of that market to the firm.”

“Susan Bright, Eve Howard, and Cole Finegan will be stepping down from the IMC after many years of hard work and significant contributions to the firm. We all owe them a huge debt of gratitude in managing very important regions through some of our strongest and most successful years as well some uniquely challenging times.”

Susan will take on a new responsibility as Global Managing Partner for Diversity and Inclusion and Responsible Business. In addition she will continue to act as the OMP for the UK until the end of the year. This is in order to ensure a smooth transition to accommodate Penny Angell’s current intense workload advising lenders on financing’s impacted by COVID-19. Eve Howard will serve as Global Head of our combined Capital Markets practice. Cole Finegan will continue serving as office managing partner of the Denver office and support the expansion efforts of the Government Relations and Public Affairs practice in the Americas.

Michael Davison nominated as Hogan Lovells Deputy CEO

Hogan Lovells CEO-select Miguel Zaldivar has nominated, with the Board’s full support and unanimous approval, London-based litigation partner Michael Davison as the firm’s proposed Deputy CEO from 1 July 2020.

An international arbitration lawyer by background, Michael is qualified in England, France and the Republic of Ireland. He currently heads our Litigation, Arbitration, and Employment practice and is involved in the TMT and ENRG industry groups. His clients include AES, Koch and Transocean. Michael has been described by The Legal 500 as “undoubtedly one of the leading practitioners in Europe” and by Chambers as “absolutely brilliant.”

Michael has been a member of the International Management Committee since 2013 and, alongside his client and management commitments, he has been a major supporter of and contributor to the firm’s pro bono work and diversity and inclusion commitments. He has a strong interest in the use of technology including AI to support our clients and is leading a number of projects in this area.

According to Hogan Lovells’ Chair, Leopold von Gerlach: “The Board is unanimous in supporting Miguel’s choice and is very pleased that Michael has agreed to bring his leadership experience and capabilities to the role of Deputy CEO. He has a very strong track record as a long-serving practice group leader and is well positioned throughout the firm to take on the role.”

Commenting on the nomination, Michael Davison says: “Miguel has a very clear sense of where he wants to take the firm with a sharp focus on client service, investment in our key markets, incentivizing collaboration across the partnership, managing our profitability and supporting diversity & inclusion. He and I share this thinking and I am looking forward to working with him.”

The recommendation of Miguel Zaldivar to become the firm’s CEO is subject to a confirmation vote by partners, the results of which are expected to be announced later in December. His appointment would make him the only current Amlaw 50 law firm leader of Hispanic American origin. Michael Davison’s appointment as Deputy CEO is conditional on Miguel Zaldivar’s appointment being agreed by the partnership.
