BTI Consulting Group Recognises Eversheds for Superior Client Service

Eversheds Sutherland is pleased to announce that it has been named to the elite 2021 BTI Client Service 30, a list of law firms recognised for delivering superior client service. The rankings are based on unprompted client feedback from general counsel at some of the world’s largest organisations.

The BTI Client Service 30 is a subset of the organisation’s larger client survey, The BTI Client Service A-Team 2021: The Survey of Law Firm Client Service Performance, which evaluates individual law firm performance through thousands of client interviews conducted over the span of 20 years.

This year’s analysis is a result of 350 independent, candid, one-on-one interviews with corporate counsel; firms cannot lobby or self-nominate to be added to the list. Of the 282 law firms recognised in The BTI Client Service A-Team 2021, Eversheds Sutherland ranked among the top 30.

Additionally, Eversheds Sutherland was recognised as a “Leader” in unprompted communication, anticipating client needs, commitment to help, client focus, understanding business, value for the dollar and quality products. The firm also achieved recognition in all three of BTI’s newest categories in the 2021 report: mobilising resources, fielding the absolute best team and quickly assessing the client’s situation.

“We greatly appreciate the confidence of our clients and peers, and are very grateful that they continuously entrust us with some of their most important matters and objectives,” said Eversheds Sutherland Co-CEO Mark D. Wasserman. “We take great pride in meeting the highest standards of service, and it is extremely rewarding to be singled out for this honour.”

Eversheds Sutherland Earns a Perfect Score for Workplace Equality

Eversheds Sutherland is proud to announce that we have again received a perfect score of 100 on the 2021 Corporate Equality Index (CEI), the nation’s premier benchmarking survey and report on corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ workplace equality, administered by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation. This is the 12th consecutive year Eversheds Sutherland has received a perfect score.

“We are proud to have our commitment to equality validated again this year by the Human Rights Campaign Foundation,” said Mark D. Wasserman, Co-CEO of Eversheds Sutherland. “Creating and maintaining a culture of inclusivity and equality is an ongoing priority for us and a cornerstone of our firm values.”

“From the previously unimaginable impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, to a long overdue reckoning with racial injustice, 2020 was an unprecedented year. Yet, many businesses across the nation stepped up and continued to prioritise and champion LGBTQ equality,” said Alphonso David, Human Rights Campaign President. “This year has shown us that tools like the CEI are crucial in the work to increase equity and inclusion in the workplace, but also that companies must breathe life into these policies and practices in real and tangible ways. Thank you to the companies that understand protecting their LGBTQ employees and consumers from discrimination is not just the right thing to do—but the best business decision.”

“Our firm values and policies demonstrate our commitment to equality to our attorneys, staff, clients and the legal industry, while building a workplace we can be all proud of,” said Chief Diversity & Inclusion Officer and Tax Partner Vanessa A. Scott. “It is great to see this effort recognised once again.”

The 2021 CEI evaluates LGBTQ-related policies and practices including non-discrimination workplace protections, domestic partner benefits, transgender-inclusive health care benefits, competency programs and public engagement with the LGBTQ community. Eversheds Sutherland’s efforts in satisfying all of the CEI’s criteria results in a 100 percent ranking and the designation as a Best Place to Work for LGBTQ Equality.

Eversheds Sutherland is pleased to announce that its Tax Practice Group has been selected as Practice Group of the Year by Law360 for the third consecutive year, and for the sixth time in the last seven years. The group has been recognised for its role in helping clients succeed in high-stakes litigation and critical business challenges in Federal, International, and State and Local tax.

“Tax has long been one of Eversheds Sutherland’s premiere practice groups, and it is an honour to be recognised consistently for the team’s tremendous work,” said Mark D. Wasserman, Eversheds Sutherland Co-CEO. “I congratulate them for their exceptional accomplishments, excellent client service and for receiving this award.”

The Law360 Practice Group of the Year award honours law firms that have worked on the biggest deals or have achieved the biggest wins in the most important cases throughout the legal industry in the past year.

“We have had a particularly strong year in tax planning and tax controversy. We are fortunate to have a group of talented tax lawyers whose experience span the breadth of every significant tax specialty area. Our lawyers are committed to providing our clients with thoughtful and integrated tax advice, and we are humbled to be recognised as a top practice group for the third year in a row,” said Jeffrey A. Friedman, US Tax Practice Group Leader.

Eversheds Sutherland serves as tax counsel to many of the world’s most prominent corporations—including more than 35 of the Fortune 100—in every area of federal, international, state and local tax law. Our prominence in legal tax services dates back to the firm’s founding nearly a century ago. More than 100 tax attorneys represent taxpayers in federal, international, employee benefits, insurance, tax exempt, and state and local tax matters. By virtue of the size of our tax practice and our varied client base, we are active in every area of taxation—from planning the most complex corporate tax transactions to representing taxpayers in administrative and judicial tax controversies.

Eversheds Sutherland tax practice expands SALT team

Eversheds Sutherland is pleased to announce the addition of Breen M. Schiller and Nikki E. Dobay to the firm’s Tax Practice Group as State and Local Tax (SALT) partners. Ms. Schiller will join the firm’s Chicago office and Ms. Dobay will join the firm’s Sacramento office in the next few weeks.

In addition to Ms. Schiller’s Illinois tax experience, she has consulted with clients on state and local tax issues across the country, including for several of Eversheds Sutherland’s existing clients. She regularly consults and represents some of the largest taxpayers in the US.

Ms. Dobay is joining from the Council On State Taxation (COST), where she had been senior tax counsel. Ms. Dobay joins former COST lawyers Jeff Friedman and Todd Lard, both of whom represented COST’s members on state tax matters before joining Eversheds Sutherland. She has extensive Oregon tax experience, including with the state’s newly imposed Commercial Activity Tax. Ms. Dobay also has represented clients on state tax policy matters across the US. Her legislative and regulatory experience will add to the firm’s considerable state tax policy practice.

“I am excited to welcome Breen and Nikki to the firm and our Tax Practice,” said Mark D. We plan to continue to grow our tax practice and the firm overall through internal promotions and additional strategic lateral hiring.”

“We are fortunate to attract Breen and Nikki to our Tax Practice,” said Jeffrey A. Friedman, Partner and Chair of the firm’s Tax Practice Group. “Adding Breen and Nikki also reflects the firm’s focus on growing our Midwest and West Coast tax presence. Their skill sets and unique backgrounds are a natural fit for our group.”

Eversheds Sutherland’s Tax Practice is comprised of more than 100 attorneys representing many of the world’s largest corporations—including more than 35 of the Fortune 100—in every industry sector and in virtually every area of tax law, on the federal, international, state and local levels. By virtue of the size of its tax practice and its varied client base, Eversheds Sutherland is active in every area of taxation—from planning the most complex corporate tax transactions to representing taxpayers in administrative and judicial tax controversies.

Eversheds supports call for Georgia hate crime legislation

Eversheds Sutherland has signed a letter by the Metro Atlanta Chamber and the Georgia Chamber of Commerce urging the Georgia General Assembly to pass a comprehensive, specific and clear bill against hate crimes in the state of Georgia. Currently, Georgia is one of the few states that does not have such a law in place.

“Our firm values stand against bigotry, hatred and inequality, and we believe the state of Georgia should send the same message by passing a law against hate crimes that protects diverse Georgians – our employees, our clients, and their families,” said Mark D. Wasserman, Co-CEO of Eversheds Sutherland. “Being part of the Georgia business community, we believe in advancing policies that support positive change and are proud to be part of a solution that fights for racial justice and equality.”

Eversheds Sutherland has joined the Metro Atlanta Chamber, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and more than 60 corporations in support of comprehensive hate crime legislation. Companies interested in joining the growing group should go to www.passhatecrimesga.com where they will find instructions how to join and contact elected officials.

Eversheds Sutherland publishes The State of Cannabis Law

Eversheds Sutherland is pleased to announce the publication of its comprehensive cannabis book, The State of Cannabis Law. Authored and researched by the firm’s Cannabis Industry team and published by Wolters Kluwer, The State of Cannabis Law is a first-of-its-kind book that provides an overview of all 50 states’ marijuana and hemp laws and includes information about key ancillary issues such as intellectual property, real estate and tax implications. The book is now available for purchase at the Wolters Kluwer online bookstore.

“Our Cannabis Industry team was formed to bring cross disciplinary insights to businesses operating in this rapidly growing industry, where state, federal and international regulations are still being developed,” said Mark D. Wasserman, Co-CEO of Eversheds Sutherland. “After working with many clients in the space, our team identified a need for comprehensive guidance on state-by-state laws which will hopefully be helpful to businesses working within and across state lines.”

As developments in the cannabis industry continue to move at rapid speed, current command of a state’s specific regulation, as well as its pending legislation and overall evolution with respect to cannabis, is vital for businesses to meaningfully work in the cannabis space, whether by serving clients, starting a business or as an ancillary service provider or other role. However, material available to make prudent decisions is often piecemeal and inconsistent in identifying various issues relevant in individual states. With this innovative book, the Eversheds Sutherland Cannabis Industry team has created a desk reference that provides industry participants with a streamlined and accessible starting point to understand the cannabis landscape in any given state.

“In the last decade, cannabis has emerged as a powerful tool for health, agricultural, and sociocultural and economic change,” said Anna C. Halsey, special counsel in the Eversheds Sutherland Intellectual Property practice group who co-authored and spearheaded the project. “Currently, more than two-thirds of the states and Washington DC have legalised marijuana for medical use while 11 states and Washington DC have legalised marijuana for adult or recreational use. Still more states have various nuances associated with their cannabis regulatory regimes. Due to these important variations, we have created this book and captured them in a single resource.”

Many significant legal and economic potentialities loom on the horizon that will continue to change the cannabis industry and legal landscape. As those changes happen, this book will evolve as well with upcoming editions.
