48 million Americans currently suffer from some degree of hearing loss, and half of them are under the age of 65. The third most prevalent health issue affecting older persons in the United States is hearing loss. Tens of millions of Americans currently live lives with a lower quality of life due to untreated hearing loss (those who do not wear hearing aids). Untreated hearing loss can result in melancholy, loneliness, depression, anxiety, paranoia, memory loss, and poor social interactions.

According to a recent study that was published in JAMA in January, dementia risk is increased by hearing loss. The study did discover, however, that older persons with hearing loss who wear hearing aids have a lower risk of developing dementia. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) reports that of the 28.8 million Americans (age 20–69) who could benefit from wearing hearing aids, less than 16% have ever used them, primarily because there is a lack of access to affordable hearing aids. This is despite numerous studies showing the increased risk of health problems associated with untreated hearing loss, including accelerated brain atrophy or shrinkage.

According to Matthew Moore, president and chief executive officer of InnerScope Hearing Technology, “International Hearing Day is a terrific chance to raise much-needed awareness about hearing loss and the worse quality of life if left untreated” in the general public. Hearing aids are the most used form of treatment for hearing loss. Nonetheless, millions of people had to live with the negative effects of untreated hearing loss due to a lack of awareness of the elevated risk of mental health issues connected with this condition and a lack of inexpensive hearing aid accessibility. We have always maintained that persons with untreated mild to moderate hearing loss may live better lives if they had more access to more affordable hearing devices.

The FDA-registered OTC hearing aids can now be purchased in stores and online without a prescription or the need to visit a doctor or hearing specialist owing to the new OTC Hearing Aid Legislation. In more than 1500 Walmart Vision Centres and online at Walmart.com, HearingAssist is pleased to sell their OTC Rechargeable Hearing Aids that are FDA-registered and Affordable.

The inaugural World Report on Hearing from the World Health Organisation (WHO) is available here. The paper takes a close look at hearing loss and how it affects society as a whole. It also offers potential solutions for efforts to identify and rehabilitate those who need hearing aids. In order to maintain the health and productivity of our communities, comprehensive health coverage must include ear and hearing care.
