Donald Ibebuike joined Foundation Chambers in 2005 and has been involved in maritime, shipping, Oil and Gas, commercial and corporate practice of the firm – proffering legal advice to Clients, litigating and arbitrating on issues relating to registration, charter & sale of vessels, arrest & release of vessels, interests in oil blocs, local content, offshore contracts, ports operations and management, general leases & mortgages and other shipping and oil and gas matters. He also advises Clients on regulatory laws and compliance, joint ventures, exploration and production contracts, Oil and Gas technical service/management agreements, carriage of goods, oil, gas & Ports assets biddings, acquisitions and divestments, corporate takeovers, mergers and reconstructions.
Upon completion of his LL.M studies at the University of Aberdeen, he gained work experience at the Marine & International Trade Department of Clyde & Co. LLP in its London office.
Donald has participated in many local and international conferences and seminars in Oil and Gas including Dispute Resolution in the Int’l Oil & Gas Business, London. He has also acted as a resource person in many conferences and seminars including a one-day Seminar on “Offshore Safety Workshop” where he presented a paper on “Achieving Effective Offshore Safety Regulation in Nigeria”. Donald has written articles published in the local and international journals including in the International Energy Law Review published by Thompson Reuters, Sweet & Maxwell, London, UK.
He has undertaken several research work relating to Oil and Gas and Shipping in the following areas: Legal Framework for Investment in the Upstream Oil and Gas Industry; Emission Trading Scheme and its Impact in the Upstream Industry; Dispute Resolution Procedures in the Oil and Gas Industry; Risk Allocation in Commercial Contracts and Upstream Projects; Investment Protection under the Energy Charter Treaty; Carriage of Containerised Cargo by Sea; Oil and Gas Asset Trading and Decommissioning Liabilities in Nigeria etc.
Donald was elevated to Partner position at Foundation Chambers in 2016.
He is a member of the Nigerian Bar Association; International Bar Association; Energy Institute, London, UK; the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators (AIPN), Houston, USA; London Court of International Arbitration; Nigerian Maritime Law Association and Centre for Petroleum Information, Lagos, Nigeria;
Donald Ibebuike graduated with LL.B (Hons) from Abia State University, Uturu, was called to the Nigerian Bar in 2004 and holds a Masters Degree (LLM) in Oil & Gas Law from the University of Aberdeen, UK (2010).
The firm was established in 1999 by Mr. Luke Chukwudi Ilogu, SAN who was formerly a Partner in the law firm of Abuka, Ajegbo, Ilogu & Nwaogu (AAIN), one of the foremost corporate law firms in Nigeria at the time. The Partnership was dissolved in 1999 after about twenty (20) years in existence.
The Firm commenced operations on Wednesday 1st September, 1999 and specializes in International Transportation Law with competencies in maritime, shipping, international trade, aviation, oil and gas and related areas.
