Kanya Satwika

Kanya joined Assegaf Hamzah & Partners in May 2003, having earlier served as a paralegal with a number of other topflight Jakarta law firms. Prior to commencing her career as a practicing lawyer, she also worked with the Tifa Foundation, a non-governmental organization focused on promoting open government and good governance.

Since moving to AHP, Kanya has gained a reputation as one of Jakarta’s most promising young lawyers in the energy and mining sectors, and has been intimately involved in several power-plant projects being developed as part of the Indonesian government’s power sector expansion program, while at the same time also playing a leading role in a number of renewable energy initiatives. In addition, she has amassed considerable experience in the rapidly developing Islamic finance field. In fact, she was one of the leading lights in arranging the legal aspects of Indonesia’s first sovereign global Islamic bond in 2009.

Kanya holds a bachelor of law degree, majoring in transnational law, from the University of Indonesia, and an LL.M in oil and gas law in 2013 from the University of Aberdeen, Aberdeen, United Kingdom. She has an advocate’s professional training certificate from the Indonesian Bar Association (PERADI), of which she is also an active member. While at university, she was an active member of the English Debating Society and the International Law Mooting Society, and represented the University of Indonesia in numerous competitions, both at the domestic and international levels.

Kanya has a deep interest in promoting legal education in Indonesia, and to this end regularly provides coaching to University of Indonesia law students on the finer points of legal debating.

Practice:

We are a full-service law firm that was founded by Fikri Assegaf and Chandra Hamzah in 2001. Since then, we have grown rapidly, gaining a reputation for innovation, commercial acumen and for putting our clients at the forefront of all that we do.

Currently with 17 partners and 96 other fee earners, the Firm’s members all have extensive experience representing a wide variety of blue-chip corporate clients, high-net-worth individuals, and governmental and international organisations.

Spreading our wings

In early 2013, AHP entered into a strategic alliance with Rajah & Tann, a Singaporean law firm that is now one of the largest in Southeast Asia, to establish a common platform that includes offices or affiliates in Singapore, China, Thailand, Lao PDR, Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia and Myanmar, as well as regional desks focusing on Japan and South Asia. The tie-up significantly enhances the firm’s capacity to provide top-class, cross-border legal services and affords its clients access to an arsenal of more than 600 lawyers across the region.

Alongside our partnership with Rajah & Tann, we continue to work closely with a range of highly regarded domestic and international law firms on both Indonesian and overseas mandates so as to allow us to draw on international best expertise and best practice across all leading jurisdictions. With the capacity to render a full suite of legal and advisory services in Indonesian, English, Malay, Mandarin and Japanese, our lawyers pay particular attention to international legal developments and how these are likely to impact on Indonesia’s and clients’ interests.

Our growth continued apace in October 2013, when we merged with boutique competition practice Rizkiyana & Iswanto, whose seven lawyers and economists, combined with the members of AHP’s existing antitrust practice, now make the firm one of the country’s market leaders in competition law.

Early 2016 saw us open our first office outside of Jakarta as part of a long-term strategy to bring world-class legal services to Indonesia’s rapidly growing regional cities. The new office, located in the East Java capital of Surabaya, is staffed by a senior AHP partner and four associates.

A truly collaborative approach

Just as important as the breadth of our expertise and geographical scope, our clients appreciate our capacity to work seamlessly and collaboratively across practice areas, industries and sectors, in order to provide innovative tailor-made solutions.

And when your legal needs extend beyond Indonesia, our strategic alliance with Rajah & Tann Asia means you have access to some of the finest legal minds throughout the region, working together to protect and advance your interests.
