LLM Degree vs JD: What’s the Difference?

December 27, 2025/in Law School/by Advisory Excellence

At present, understanding what avenues exist within legal education can aid prospective students in making informed decisions. Law degrees include the LLM and the JD, the two most familiar designations. Each of these programs serves different functions in the workforce and different career paths. Differentiating them can make it clear which path will be better suited to an individual’s purpose.

Before diving into specific details, it helps to understand how these two degrees fundamentally differ in scope and intent. The JD and the LLM degrees are designed for distinct stages of legal education and serve different professional goals. One focuses on preparing students to practice law, while the other builds on existing legal knowledge through specialization.

The sections below break down these differences across structure, eligibility, and career outcomes.

Defining the JD Degree

The JD (or Juris Doctor) is a professional law degree. It prepares students for the practice of law, primarily in the United States. Quantitative data show that virtually every single law school requires a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) for enrollment in a JD program. It usually takes full-time students three years to complete this program. The curriculum includes foundational legal courses in contracts, torts, property, and civil procedure.

Understanding the LLM Degree

LLM means Master of Laws, and it is an advanced academic degree in law. Most aspirants of this credential have already attained a “First Degree in Law” (like a JD, or equivalent abroad). Most LLM programs take one year of full-time study to complete. The program provides students with the opportunity to specialize in their legal studies, such as international law, tax, or human rights. In many jurisdictions, unlike the JD, the LLM does not justify admission to the bar.

Admission Requirements

Most students are nearing the end of an undergraduate degree when they begin a JD program. People fill out their applications and send in transcripts, SAT/ACT scores, recommendation letters, etc. Certain schools will also take personal statements and/or interviews into account. Unlike LLM programs, most of them are looking for candidates with previous legal education. The vast majority call for the completion of a first law degree (be it a JD or an equivalent international qualification).

Program Structure and Curriculum

Typical courses in a JD program focus on fundamental topics. Core legal concepts are often introduced during the first year. In the following years, they could take elective classes and train for additional skills. The curriculum involves practical work, including legal writing, moot court, and internships. The difference is that LLM programs have much more flexibility. Depending on their interests or career goals, candidates choose courses.

Purpose and Career Outcomes

JD stands for Juris Doctor, and it trains students to be practicing attorneys. The credential serves as the standard for legal practice in the United States. A JD leads to opportunities in law firms, government agencies, and corporate legal departments. Others go on to use this qualification to hold judicial or academic positions. The LLM, in contrast, is used for entirely different purposes. International attorneys might utilize it to become familiar with the legal system of an additional country.

Bar Exam Eligibility

However, many JD graduates in the U.S. are eligible to sit for the bar exam right after they earn their degree. In order to practice law in most states, graduates must pass this exam. Holders of an LLM, especially those who earned theirs overseas, may have additional requirements to meet. In other jurisdictions, international lawyers may or may not be permitted to sit for the bar with an LLM. Prior to enrolling, students thinking about this career should explore the available requirements for working in the area that they prefer.

Global Recognition and Mobility

In the United States and a handful of other nations, the JD degree is the primary form of degree that is recognized. It is only relevant because it has value to those who want to qualify to practice law in those jurisdictions. Many countries have similar programs. To adapt to new legal environments or to improve their credentials internationally, foreign-trained lawyers usually pursue the LLM.

Conclusion

While the JD and an LLM are both valuable degrees in legal education, each serves its own unique function. Knowing their distinctions allows future students to shape decisions in sync with their aspirations. This ensures that each person carefully considers which degree is appropriate for them in their career.
