Joanne Rotondi Named Practice Area Leader at Hogan Lovells

January 9, 2023/in Leadership/by News Desk

Joanne Rotondi has been named Practice Area Leader at Hogan Lovells. “Joanne offers substantial experience handling complex, cross-border matters in the transportation and commerce sectors,” said Janice Hogan, head of the firm’s IPMT practise area.

Currently, Rotondi is a partner in the company’s Environment and Natural Resources practise and the Global Head of the Transport and Logistics industrial area. Since joining the company in 2000 as an associate, she has focused her practise on the convergence of environmental and transportation law and regulation.

As a pioneer in the field of transportation regulation, Rotondi counsels major automakers and suppliers on emissions, fuel economy, and greenhouse gas regulations at the state and federal levels. Rotondi also supports projects in navigating the complexities of compliance and reporting requirements for the National Environmental Policy Act, Clean Air Act, and Clean Water Act, among other state and federal rulemakings.

Having represented the only two LNG and crude oil export deepwater port projects to receive regulatory approval from the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Administration to build in domestic waters, Rotondi also provides project developers of liquefied natural gas terminals and deepwater ports with important government approvals.

Along with prominent representatives from business, academia, the public interest, and state, local, and tribal groups, Rotondi also serves as a member of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Mobile Source Technical Review Subcommittee of the Clean Air Act Advisory Committee to provide advice and recommendations on the scientific and technical facets of mobile source air pollution and motor fuels.

Investing and Trading Internationally

In addition to serving as co-chair of our Public International Law Group and a member of the firm’s One Americas senior leadership team, Stoel also advises governments and multinational corporations on disputes related to international trade and investment policy. Among his customers are Canadian Solar, the Ontario government, Kinder Morgan, Nestle, M. S. International, and Urenco.

Recent victories in the second state-to-state arbitration under Article 31 of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, in which Stoel defended the Canadian government and the country’s solar industry, set a significant precedent. Additionally, he assisted in securing a negotiated resolution of the second-ever USMCA Rapid Response Labour Mechanism issue by working with a cross-border HL team in the U.S. and Mexico.

Stoel has assisted in planning the Judicial Conference for the Court and co-chairs the International Trade Committee of the Federal Circuit Bar Association. He also serves on the Board of Advisors of the Georgetown Journal of International Law and teaches public international law at Georgetown University.

During Kaplan’s time there, the firm was named a Tier 1 practise for International Trade by The Legal 500 US, a Band 1 practise by Chambers in the International Trade: Trade Remedies and Trade Policy category, and a Law360 Practice Group of the Year in 2020.
