How to Organize Lawyer Blog Posts for Content Promotion

January 9, 2026/in Blogs/by Advisory Excellence

Blogs written in legalese are ineffective, but each law firm has its own platform for lawyers to become thought leaders. Here are some quick and simple methods to organize blog entries to make them easier to read. The gold standard for positioning a lawyer as a thought leader is still traditional public relations. Reputable news sources’ bylined stories and quotes are the best. However, bylines and quotes are rare unless you’re a CNN contributor or columnist, which are challenging positions to land. Fortunately, each law company has a website that allows lawyers to develop thought leadership and interact directly with clients, both present and prospective.

There are many advantages to content marketing. By demonstrating to reporters and editors that lawyers and firms are reliable sources of information, publishing educational pieces on a company website aids in public relations. By raising a website’s position in the search engine, blogs aid with SEO. Additionally, blogs help other marketing initiatives by offering content for social media and exhibiting thought leadership for applications for awards and rankings. However, there is always a but: the tone and style of blog writing and legal writing differ greatly, making it difficult for lawyers to switch between the two in an efficient manner. What distinguishes blog writing from legal writing?

  • Every word will be carefully examined. Because there is a lot of qualifying and defining involved, precision comes at the expense of readability, making it wordy and challenging for non-lawyers to understand.
  • Writing a blog is intended for prospective clients, who may or may not be other attorneys. Blogs are more effective when they are succinct, whether the target audience is members of the general public seeking information about personal injury, real estate developers, or the C-suite of healthcare or technology companies.

The article’s core idea is the next significant distinction between blog writing and legal writing.

  • A summary of the facts is recited before drawing a conclusion in legal writing, particularly in litigation.
  • Your audience wants to know the main point of your site.

Tone is another important distinction.

  • Legal writing is frequently quite conservative, even though it can occasionally be strong and rhetorical.

The most crucial part is the introduction.

Online readers want content that are concise and direct. That should be done in the first sentence. Inform prospective clients whether a court case will alter how they conduct business. Inform them if a new law will make a clause in a contract unenforceable. Tell them the truth. Details and supporting information should be saved for later in the article by attorneys or the marketing directors who edit them. Complete case numbers, case descriptions, or legislation numbers are not required in the opening paragraph.

Conclusion

It makes sense that many lawyers would rather speak in a guarded manner when exercising thought leadership. But comments, background information, and broader reflections are still welcome, and that’s what the last section is for. A broader, more global viewpoint could be included in the last section, even though many writers might be inclined to just summarize everything mentioned above in the final paragraph. This is when further in-depth historical research or forecasts of the issue’s broader long-term effects can be useful. This is also where writers can showcase their wit or intelligence with witty word choices or an entendre to conclude.
