How Advertising Is Adapting To AI
AI is making an enormous difference to the way advertising works. Conventionally, a company would put out an ad manually using software tools that are already available. However, artificial intelligence is fundamentally rethinking how online marketing works and making it more agentic and malleable.
One of the main changes has been the hyper-personalization of AI. This means that artificial intelligence systems are now able to pick up on the behaviour, context, and intent of users in real-time and then use these signals to tailor ads to them. This means that they’re better able to hit on the pain points that they’re experiencing right now. Advertising written days ago by a marketing professional collecting simple data, it now can present visuals and messaging that directly deal with the challenges of the user and make them more likely to click and buy. Ultimately, this is driving higher engagement and conversion, with predictive analytics now being used to anticipate what online users require before they even type it into search bars. Again, this type of precognition is helpful for businesses that are competing in highly saturated and competitive markets.
At the same time, Generative AI is coming to the fore for the production and optimisation of adverts. More than 40% of adverts are now expected to be AI-generated or assisted in 2026, with agencies using artificial intelligence for rapid ideation for things like variations, copywriting, and visuals. These days, it’s hard to find a top advertising agency that isn’t using it.
A new technology called Dynamic Creative Optimization automatically tweaks the elements of ads in real-time using feedback data from sources like Google Analytics. This information is fed back into the system, essentially automating conventional A/B testing, which was something that took up a lot of time historically. The new technology shouldn’t be viewed as slop. It’s not a mediocre AI output. Instead, it’s working with humans to create bold and more engaging adverts that have a greater effect on online users and really meet their needs in real time.
Autonomous AI systems are handling end-to-end workflows with minimal human efforts. Already, there are multiple platforms like Metas, Advantage Plus and Google Ads, AI Max and Performance Max which are moving in this direction. AI handles the core functions of the advertising process while marketers are more like strategic overseers. They manage all of the spinning plates. This means that campaigns are shifting from static to more continuous self-adjusting initiatives instead of updating them every quarter, they’re constantly reacting to new data.
Lastly, AI is being used for smarter targeting. The idea is to identify consumers’ micro-signals and behavioral patterns that conventional systems miss and then take advantage of these. Already we’re seeing this in the realm of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) which is replacing SEO. AI-driven assets are being used more often by consumers to find specific information about products or services that they want. Therefore, it’s incumbent now on advertisers to ensure that their advertising and information gets into these systems.
