Filing for a Nonprofit: What It Actually Costs to DIY or Hire a Specialist

April 8, 2026/in Business Plan/by Advisory Excellence

Starting a nonprofit is genuinely exciting. You have a cause you care about, and you want to make it official. Today, you can start a nonprofit online,  but when you look up what that actually involves, the paperwork gives you pause.

Even for the most charitable of purposes, there are state filings, IRS applications, and fees involved,  and it’s not always clear where to begin. One of the earliest decisions you’ll face is whether to handle it yourself or work with a specialist.

This piece breaks down both options honestly, so you can figure out which one actually makes sense for your situation.

The Two Filings Every Nonprofit Requires

Filing for a nonprofit means two things:

  • Incorporating as a nonprofit at the state level
  • Applying for 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status with the IRS

State incorporation is relatively simple – a short form and a state filing fee. The IRS application is more involved. Depending on your organization, you’ll file either Form 1023-EZ or the standard Form 1023, which asks about your purpose, governance structure, finances, and activities.

Government Fees You’ll Pay No Matter Who Files

These costs are fixed. They apply whether you prepare everything yourself or hire someone.

  • State incorporation fee: $25–$100, depending on the state
  • Form 1023-EZ (for smaller organizations with projected annual revenue under $50,000): $275
  • Form 1023 (standard, for more complex organizations): $600

So you’re looking at roughly $300–$700 in government fees before anything else. That number doesn’t change based on who fills out the paperwork.

The 1023-EZ is a short online form for organization with a single, clear charitable purpose and straightforward finances, and it’s manageable on your own.

While the standard Form 1023 runs over 40 pages. Errors or incomplete answers can lead to IRS follow-up requests, delays, or rejection; and a rejection means refiling and paying the fee again.

What a Nonprofit Specialist Does and What They Typically Charge

A nonprofit attorney or filing service, besides filing the forms, reviews your mission statement against IRS requirements, drafts or reviews your bylaws and articles of incorporation, determines which form applies to you, and handles any IRS correspondence that follows.

That last part matters more than it might seem. Vague language in your stated purpose, which is something easy to overlook, can prompt an IRS clarification request that delays your approval by months.

Costs vary depending on who you hire and how complex your organization is:

  • An Online filing service (such as Swyft Filings) offers free to premium tiers, depending on what’s included
  • Nonprofit consultants will cost around $500–$1,500 for form preparation
  • While, Attorneys: $1,500–$5,000+, depending on experience and location

How to Decide Which Route Makes Sense for Your Nonprofit

Now, while it may seem that DIY filing will cost you less, you must first consider what a mistake would actually cost you – in fees, time, and delayed operations.

Filing on your own is a reasonable option if:

  • The mission is clearly charitable and easy to describe in plain terms,
  • qualifying for the 1023-EZ,
  • Whoever is filing is willing to read the IRS instructions thoroughly, not skim them
  • A knowledgeable person can look over the application before it’s submitted

Hiring a specialist makes more sense when:

  • Paid staff, multiple programs, or more than one income source are involved
  • Which IRS form applies isn’t clear
  • Any part of the work could look commercial or political to the IRS
  • An IRS inquiry letter has already arrived
  • Time simply isn’t there to do this carefully

The IRS website and the National Council of Nonprofits both also offer free guidance that’s worth reading before you start, regardless of the route you choose.

The Paperwork Exists for a Reason

The filings, the fees, the detailed questions about your purpose and finances, none of it is arbitrary.

Tax-exempt status comes with real benefits: exemption from federal income tax, eligibility for grants, and the ability to accept tax-deductible donations.

The IRS process is essentially how the government verifies that an organization genuinely exists to serve others, not to operate as a business under a charitable label.

What’s worth keeping in mind when the paperwork feels like too much is that it’s not designed to discourage legitimate causes. It’s designed to protect the credibility of the nonprofit designation itself.
