Professional Biography:

Launched in 2011 through the merger of two leading auditing firms, SizweNtsaluba VSP and Gobodo Incorporated, SizweNtsalubaGobodo this year celebrates a combined legacy of 30 years.

From humble beginnings preparing the books for the doctors, lawyers and shebeen owners of Soweto, the firm has over the years made its mark as a true transformation pioneer, and is today recognised as the largest black-owned and first fully home-grown South African accounting firm.

Founded on a shared common vision to grow sustainable black business, SizweNtsaluba VSP traces its roots back to 1985 when the firm was established primarily as a business consultancy and advisory firm under the name Ebony Financial Services, later adding an auditing suite to its services.

Operating in the heart of the ‘apartheid’ era, the early years were dark for black professionals, where all meaningful public and private sector work was effectively reserved for white-owned establishments.

Despite modest ambitions, succeeding as a black auditing firm was understandably enormously challenging, bearing testimony to the strength of character, drive and commitment of the firm’s founding members:

– Sango Ntsaluba, Co-founder of SizweNtsaluba VSP / Amabubesi director
– Sizwe Nxasana, Co-founder of SizweNtsaluba VSP / CEO of FirstRand
– Juneas Lekgetha, Founder of Ebony Financial Services / visionary behind SizweNtsaluba VSP
– Clement Mannya, Director at Ebony Financial Services / Public Sector Consulting division / 1986 – 1998
– Nonkululeko Gobodo, Founder of Gobodo Incorporation / SA’s first black woman CA / Co-founder of SizweNtsalubaGobodo

It was after Sango Ntsaluba, joined the firm in 1992, that the firm changed its name to Ntsaluba & Company. A number of smaller mergers followed most notably one with Sizwe & Company headed by the then future FirstRand CEO, Sizwe Nxasana.

It was however 1994 that was a defining year for the firm. Following the country’s first democratic elections, valuable opportunities, particularly in the public sector, started to open up for black firms. During this time SizweNtsaluba VSP won the much vied for Transnet account which the growing firm used as a case study and point of reference to earn additional private sector work.

SizweNtsalubaGobodo’s current dynamic CEO, Victor Sekese joined SizweNtsaluba VSP in 1994 after completing his articles at Deloitte and spending a year in the finance division at BMW South Africa. In 2006, Sekese was appointed CEO of the firm. During this time the firm also received formal recognition for its empowerment credentials in the form of Business Map Foundation/Business Report BEE award and international status as a member of Morison International. It was in the same year that Gobodo Incorporated took root under the able leadership of Nonkululeko Gobodo, South Africa’s first black female chartered accountant. Committed to transformation within the accounting sector, Gobodo’s vision was unprecedented: to grow the business into the largest black female owned accounting firm in the country.

Gobodo too came from humble beginnings. After qualifying in 1987 as a Chartered Accountant, she started up a small accounting and audit business in the Eastern Cape, unknowingly launching the beginning of her career as a respected visionary and entrepreneur. SizweNtsaluba VSP and Gobodo Incorporated merged in 2011, thereby successfully evolving into a significant contender in the accounting and auditing industry. Today the firm employs over a 1000 staff and has twelve offices around the country, with a presence in all nine provinces.

The firm has also been recognised for a number of awards over the years including:

– Top Women Awards: 2014, “Top Gender Empowered Company: Financial Award”
– BBQ Awards: “Best Established Black Business Award”
– ABASA: Over the last eight years in succession, recognised by ABASA for having produced the highest number of black chartered accountants in the medium firm category.
– International Accounting Bulletin Awards: In March 2013, the firm won a joint award for the most “Sustainable firm of the year” at the International Accounting Bulletin Awards.
– Oliver Empowerment Awards: In 2013, the firm won two Oliver Empowerment Awards for being a “Top Empowered Company” as well as a “Corporate Leadership Award”.

With the firm’s purpose aimed at meaningfully contributing to the development of African leadership by creating a leadership legacy that transforms the economic landscape of Africa from prospect to prosperity, going forward, Sekese has his sights set firmly on the African continent.

Big ambitions perhaps, but certainly achievable for a firm that continues to succeed against all odds.
