Professional Biography:

Susan Abro has been practising Law for the past 26 years. She is the sole proprietor of her business, which she started in 1995, and specialises in Family Law and Litigation, having acted in over 3 000 matters.

Susan is an expert on family law issues, including applications in terms of the Hague Convention on Abduction of Children – having dealt with Swedish, Australian, USA and UK jurisdictions, as well as countries which are not signatories to the Hague Convention, such as the UAE. She is a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers.

Susan is dedicated to assisting clients who are experiencing difficult changes in their lives due to family law issues and to do so with professionalism, integrity, and compassion. She approaches each case differently and provides every client with personal attention. Her goal is for every client to receive the support that they require in matters which are often extremely emotional and involve high conflict situations and personalities, and often include domestic violence.

Susan`s aim is to bring a level-headed objective approach and to try to resolve issues and conflicts, and exhaust all avenues of alternative dispute resolution that are available to the parties. In negotiation and litigation, she is her client’s unwavering champion.

Susan is involved with public interest litigation, including, the rights of children to separate legal representation, Honour Based Domestic Violence, Islamic marriages, Common Law Partnerships and Civil Unions.

Susan has been the Chairperson of the Family Law Committee of the Law Society of South Africa from 2007 to date. In this capacity and together with colleagues, she has been instrumental in introducing Arbitration in Family Law to South Africa, and has addressed Parliament about various draft legislation over the years. Susan served as the Co – Chairperson of the Law Society of South Africa 2003/2004.

Susan acted as a Judge of the High Court of South Africa, Kwa Zulu -Natal Provincial Division, and was appointed by the Judicial Services Commission as a Judge of the Electoral Court for two consecutive terms, from  2005.

Susan has been involved with various non-government and Charitable organisations and believes that everyone has an obligation to assist those less fortunate. She has presented papers at local and international conferences dealing with, inter alia, Domestic Violence, Family Law, Matrimonial Law, Women and Children`s rights and empowerment.

Susan has been nominated for and is the recipient of various awards, including the Businesswomen’s Association of South Africa, Professional Businesswoman of the Year 2012. Lawyer Monthly Legal Awards -Family Lawyer of the Year South Africa 2016. Women in Law-Family Lawyer of the year 2017, Corporate International-Boutique Family Law Firm of the Year 2017, Susan is a National Board member of the Chaine Des Rotisseurs, South Africa, having achieved Commandeur status in 2018.
