Countries That Require Pre-Travel Authorization for US Citizens
While there’s no doubt that a US passport is one of the most powerful in the world — it was ranked 10th on Henley’s Global Passport Ranking in 2026 — it doesn’t mean that every door is automatically open.
Although many countries are visa-free, some still require US citizens to apply for an eVisa or travel authorization before departure.
What makes this even trickier is that some of these countries aren’t obvious at all. You might expect strict entry rules in certain regions, but others on the list tend to surprise travelers.
To help you plan your next trip, this guide covers which countries require pre-travel authorization for US citizens, plus what to expect before you go. After all, a bit of planning in the beginning makes all the difference, whether that’s sorting out your travel documents early or setting up a TSA PreCheck with Easegov for a smoother airport experience.
What is a Pre-Travel Authorization?
Before traveling internationally, it helps to understand the different types of entry requirements.
While the terminology can vary (ETA, ESTA, eVOA, and so on), most entry documents fall into three main categories:
- Visa-free: No advance paperwork is required. US citizens can simply arrive with a valid passport and enter the country for tourism within the allowed stay period.
- Travel authorization: This is a quick online approval you need to get before your trip. It’s not a full visa, but you’ll still need to apply in advance. Common examples include ETA, ESTA, and eVOA systems. This is what we’ll cover in this article.
- Visa needed: A more formal application process that often requires additional documents, longer processing times, and usually an embassy visit before you can travel.
Countries That Require Pre-Travel Authorization for US Citizens
As mentioned above, it’s always a good idea to check visa requirements before you start planning your trip. To make things easier, we’ve included a general overview below, organized by region:
Commonwealth & Oceania
The United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand have all introduced their own version of ETA systems, which means US travelers need to apply online before arrival (even for short tourist trips).
Likewise, the lush country of Papua New Guinea in the South Pacific grants visits of up to 60 days with an electronic visa.
Asia & the Caucasus
Countries like India, Vietnam, and Sri Lanka all require online applications in advance, while others such as Laos, Nepal, Cambodia, and Indonesia offer a mix of eVisa or visa-on-arrival systems.
In the Caucasus, Azerbaijan also uses a straightforward eVisa process.
Interestingly, Bhutan doesn’t offer a typical eVisa system. As part of their “high value, low impact” tourism commitment, every traveler needs to have a visa, go through an authorized tour operator, and pay a fixed fee per day before they can enter the country. The funds from this fee go back into the country and help pay for locals’ education, healthcare, and more.
Africa
Many African countries have moved towards implementing eVisa or pre-travel authorization systems in recent years.
In West Africa, this includes Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Guinea (not to be confused with Guinea-Bissau, which offers visas on arrival), Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and Togo.
In Central Africa, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Equatorial Guinea also require advance authorization.
Over in East Africa, nations such as Burundi, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, and Uganda offer eVisas or ETAs.
Further south, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritania, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe require some form of pre-travel approval, while the popular island destination Seychelles uses a travel authorization system.
Americas
Most countries in the Americas are visa-free for US citizens, including popular destinations like Mexico, Canada, Argentina, and Costa Rica. In general, this is one of the easiest regions to travel through without worrying too much about entry requirements.
However, there is one exception: Brazil. According to an official government release, as of “April 10th, 2025, persons utilizing their passports from […] the United States to visit Brazil for tourism and business have been once again subject to visa requirements for entry into Brazilian territory.”
The eVisa application is completed online and approved in advance, so it’s something to factor into your plans before booking.
Middle East
Countries like Bahrain, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Libya, and Saudi Arabia all require some form of visa or pre-travel authorization for US citizens.
Speaking of which, Saudi Arabia only opened up to international tourism relatively recently when it launched its eVisa system in 2019 as part of a broader push to diversify its economy beyond oil. Since then, it has quickly become one of the region’s most talked-about destinations, with travelers drawn to places like AlUla, the Red Sea coast, and its vast desert landscapes.
These are some of the main countries that require pre-travel authorization for US citizens, but requirements can change over time. For the most up-to-date information, it’s always best to check official government sources or consult a travel agent before your trip
