How to Boost Your Business English

July 20, 2024/in English/by News Desk

It is safe to say that the English language is the Lingua Franca of the world. Even though there are plenty of other languages, like Mandarin or Hindi, that are spoken natively by more people, English is still the most widely spoken and understood language in the world. This is particularly important in the business world, where the ability to communicate in English can open up a world of opportunities. However, just being able to speak and communicate in English isn’t the same as having a decent comprehension of business English. While you can get by using standard vocabulary, if you are serious about extending your operations across borders, it can pay dividends to learn the correct way of speaking when you are looking to secure business. This article aims to enlighten anyone who may not be entirely familiar with business English and provide a few pointers on how to get your skills up to snuff.

Utilize Language Learning Apps Frequently

In days gone by, your only hope was to hire a teacher and take classes in physical classrooms or learn entirely autonomously. Fortunately, the modern world has given us a raft of incredible technologies that we can use to better ourselves in a number of ways, including learning a new language. These range from the relatively basic options like Duolingo et al. to far more sophisticated options that utilize AI to hold your hand throughout the learning process. If you are only interested in learning the basics, the former choices are ideal as they are often free and allow you to gameify the process. However, if you are seeking more advanced knowledge and a deeper understanding of the language, such as learning business English, you might want to look into the more sophisticated options. According to the language experts over at Mi Teacher Ai, these sorts of tools can help dramatically improve your chances of passing official tests and gaining certification that proves you are able to speak fluently. Once you have these credentials, you can use them to advance your career options or, as is more likely, use your found skills to conduct business around the globe and increase your revenue from entering new markets.

Expand Vocabulary Daily For Fluency

Vocabulary is only one component of gaining fluency in a language, but it’s an extremely important one nonetheless. When it comes to a very specific subset of English, such as the kind spoken in professional settings, it can really pay to not only acquire as many formal words as possible but also try to get them to fit together in such a way as to indicate you mean business. You can do it the modern way, as discussed in the previous point, or do it the old-fashioned way and whip out the old dictionary! However, if you really want to speed up your learning, you should combine the old and the new, as it will help you to grow your vocab far more naturally than if you were to stick with one option.

Practice Common Business Idioms

If you want to be on the same page as everyone else and get the ball rolling, you need to avoid sticking only to the more well-known phrases and take some time to learn some idioms, such as those at the start of this sentence. Every language will have its own idioms, which are generally considered to be figurative phrases that indicate something. So, to take the example of getting the ball rolling, we don’t actually mean we will roll a ball, but instead, it means to get something started, whether that be an idea or campaign because once things are moving, things start to fall in place. English is full of idioms, and the business variety is no different, so if you want to genuinely understand everything that is being said or you want to come across more fluently, idioms should be part of your curriculum.

Engage In Professional Networking Events, And Don’t Be Afraid To Speak

If you have the chance to attend professional events where the primary language is going to be English, you should jump at the chance. Even if your existing English abilities aren’t where you’d like them to be, the opportunity to talk with others in the language you are learning is indispensable. However, the only rule at these events is to make sure you can build up enough confidence actually to speak to others and avoid retreating into your shell. Don’t worry about how you might be perceived because most people will be kind enough to let the occasional mistake pass by. You will learn new words, have the chance to speak with both native English speakers as well as those for whom English is also a second language, and gain a deeper understanding of how to interact and discuss the matters you want to bring up.

Listen To English-Language Business-Related Podcasts

For purely listening exercises, one fantastic option is to find a few business-related podcasts to listen to and have them playing whenever you are in the mood. As long as the casts are related in some way to business, finance, or politics, you will gain an incredible amount from listening to how the presenters speak and discuss matters with each other. You should hear how they speak in both formal and informal ways as this can help you to gain the ability to appear less formal and stuffy when engaging in your own conversations…after all, even business talk needs to have some fun injected into it every now and then!

Use Tools To Assist You In Your Writing

Speaking and reading are all well and good, but what if you need to write out emails and project briefs? In these situations, your writing will often be even more formal than your conversation, as it will need to portray a very succinct set of ideas to other people in your team or those from whom you are vying to acquire business. Although you shouldn’t have to rely on tools to help you write constantly, they can be instrumental in getting you out of a pinch. Online tools like Grammarly offer real-time suggestions that you can choose to use or ignore as you please, but the kicker is that it can be integrated into your email client, word formatting software, and anything else that you might use. This gives you a great opportunity not merely to write things correctly but to learn as you go.

Learning a new language is always daunting, but it can be even more challenging when attempting to understand the most formal version of it. English, with all of its various peculiarities, is complicated for many people, but with the ideas in this post, you should be speaking business English in no time.
