Avoiding Burnout when Opening a Business
It is not easy to start a new business and anybody who tells you that it’s simple is lying. There are so many things to consider and so many ideas that you have to work through before your business can become a reality. There are pieces that you need to put into place that can put you into a position of feeling very overwhelmed very quickly. You could be learning about which accountants that you need for your business, or which financial advisors you should be relying on.
You can get hit with the information about your customers and what they need, and you can even be told that you need to get the card reader for your phone here so that you can continue with payment processing 24 hours a day. It can become a lot especially if you’re trying to make a point of making your business successful. Whether you are a retail store, taking part in a market stall on a Saturday morning, or you are running an online business, you have to think about what it will mean to avoid burnout so that that overwhelm doesn’t overtake. So, with that in mind let’s take a look at how you can avoid burnout as a new business owner.
- Don’t do it alone. You might well start out by yourself, but it doesn’t mean that you have to continue by yourself. Having other people to help you is a good way to stop burnout from developing. Working without relief is a good way to make sure that you are exhausted. Instead of trying to do everything by yourself you should make sure that you have at least one or two people that you can delegate to so that you can focus on the things that matter the most.
- Put together a schedule. Do you really need to be at work the second you wake up? Likely not. You need to make sure that you have a schedule so that you are not working 24 hours a day just to make your business something that’s tangible. Not taking a break from work is going to put you in a position where you are too exhausted to continue but that you push yourself to do so anyway. Set your healthy boundaries early and avoid burnout later on down the track.
- Have at least one day per week where you unplug. That means no phones, no computers, no point of sale systems, no tablets, no nothing. Taking yourself away from the computers when you work from one all the time is a good way to make sure that you avoid burnout. Whether it’s a Sunday, a Saturday or a Wednesday all day long, you need to make sure that you are away from your screen at least once a week.
- Don’t neglect yourself. Are you eating? Are you sleeping at least 7 to 8 hours a night? Are you getting outside for some vitamin D at least once a day? If you’re averting your eyes and not answering these questions, they are pretty confident that you’re not doing enough self care to make sure that you are healthy. You need to keep your body and your mind in good shape if you want to make sure that you avoid burning out.
